Subtitles Aren't Matching the Client's Exact Spec

Clients sometimes come back to us after receiving a subtitled video and say that we didn't match the exact specifications they laid out for the font/spacing/etc.
The issue at the heart of this discrepancy is screen resolution. Screen resolution is measured in PPI (pixels per inch) and print resolution is measured in DPI (dots per inch), but the terms are often used interchangeably. So a client’s “70 pixels and 42 pt font” might not look quite the same as ours if they’re getting their measurements in DPI and we're working with PPI.
Programs for displaying still images and programs for playing video measure things differently. Some graphic design software uses Points or mm/cm/inches, whereas we use only pixels or percentages in EZTitles. So if the person ordering the subtitles isn't a video editor they might not be able to get us different measurements.
TechOps can try to get closer to a client's spec by letting them use screenshots for comparison (this is why we recommend sending approval screenshots prior to delivering the fully rendered video), but it’s difficult to get pinpoint accuracy. |
