"Have you tried turning off and back on again?"
The most common errors that occur in Windows computers appear when the PC has been running for an extended period of time, typically longer than a day. The solution to this problem was to shut down the PC to clear its memory so that it can boot up fresh.
This has changed with Windows 10. By default, Windows 10 uses a feature called Fast Startup. This feature allows Windows to start up from a cold boot faster than normal by saving the contents of memory to disk instead of clearing memory when shut down. This is essentially the same as the hibernation function from previous versions of Windows. When booting back up, Windows retrieves the contents of its memory from disk instead of starting from fresh. This means that the uptime counter does not get reset and any stale data stored in memory doesn't go away.
The solution to this problem is to perform a restart of your workstation everyday. Performing a restart completely clears the memory of your PC and allows it start back up fresh. Leaving your workstation running after your shift ends instead of shutting it down also allows updates, maintenance tasks, and daily virus scans to run while on your PC while it is not in use. |
